The Google Search Works site update April 28/2017
We have heard already about the Google Owl update, but it turns out that the company has also released an update of their Search Works website. This is what Google said when announcing the Owl update.
The Google Search Works website was released several years ago, in March 2013, and since that time, there were some revisions of its content and features. But now its design has been completely changed and a great deal of the content was simply removed or relocated to other places.
Nevertheless, it is still possible to get an access to the site right via an URL link, but it's hard to get access to the previous content via the updated home page of the website. When the Search Works was introduced for the first time, there was a way to take a look at the samples of webpages deleted from the search results because they had spam. But according to what Gary Illyes said about it, they had only redesigned the website, although there wasn't anything new in particular there.
Google releases similar mobile search image items April 12/2017
Since now on Google will use the same or similar image items for the mobile web and Android search apps to show the results of image search. In other words, it will show similar items in both cases. For example, if a user is looking for sports outfit and he clicks on the one that he found the most interesting, Google might show him also more of similar images of sports outfit that are available to buy somewhere around the place where he is located.
Worthy to be mentioned that Google image search product manager wrote on the Google's blog dedicated to the search issues that the users need to use specific metadata on their webpages in order to make their images be considered by Google when showing the results for similar items. By the use of schema.org on the webpages where products or services are offered and providing the image reference, you can make sure that your image will be seen if any user looks for a similar result.
The products that you want to include in the similar search results also needs to have a name, defined price and currency, if appropriate, and image on their host pages. These features make them eligible for the similar results.
In fact, this schema was introduced last year in December, but nobody from Google has ever announced it. According to Google's words, this kind of search feature for images is today available for such products as shoes, bags and glasses, but in the nearest future they are planning to include also categories with items for garden and home.
Google confirmed other updates around Fred release April 04/2017
When there appeared news about the release of Fred update, which made lots of noise throughout the world of SEO, a great number of sites, showing a mismatch between them and other websites, were facing a massive dive in their original Google traffic. While many of the webmaster and site owners who found themselves watching their sites disappearing from the search results were disappointed and hit by a stroke of panic, other SEO specialists were not stressed too much because of that.
Recently Gary Illeys made a statement confirming that the same weekend when we all faced the newly released Fred update, there were some other algorithms that were hit by the change as well. According to Gary's comment, all of these updates were pursuing their own goals and had nothing to do with Fred. Accomplishment of these updates was an independent step towards improving Google's work in different aspects.
As it was already mentioned several times, almost every site hit by Fred had low quality content and owners of all of them didn't have any other goal except earning money without benefitting the user on the whole. At the same time, there were also sites that were hit because of different issues with links etc.
Gary Illyes was clear when he said that if your website was hit on between 7th and 8th of March, you can all reasons to believe that they were hit by Fred, although there is also a possibility that there could be some other issues. So now we see a question arising: which was really the update hitting all of the sites? Turns out, if you still think that your website provided a high quality amazing content and you can't understand what Fred hit it for, maybe it really wasn't Fred and you did have a good site.
Google rich cards get expanded all over the world March 30/2017
Last year the company announced about release of the so-called rich cards in the United States. Since that time, their popularity has grown significantly and Google keeps expanding it far and wide across the world. Support for the rich cards is becoming more and more available and according to the latest announcement of the company, they are now in free access at a global level.
In the very beginning, the appearance of the rich cards was supposed to be used for the movie and recipe websites. It was a new way of creating an opportunity for the owners of websites to provide a presentation of their content on the page of search results. However, it took only several months to expand globally and today it is possible to create rich cards for websites all over the world.
This opportunity allows site owners to grab more attention of the audience and attract more users to their pages. No matter where in the world the location of the user is, he will be able to get free access to the information he currently needs. For example, browsing restaurants in London is possible even if the user is somewhere in Delhi.
How machine learning will coexist with the Google algorithm March 29/2017
Last week there was the search marketing conference for SEO and SEM professionals, where AMA with Google were discussing a number of issues related to the meaning, importance and the impact of the latest updates, including the great Google algorithm update on the search results, exact match, websites and the Internet advertising industry on the whole.
During the conference, Gary Illyes expressed his opinion regarding the machine learning and how it is going to affect the currently existing Google algorithms. According to his words, there is a very small chance that it will take over the ranking algorithms and that they both are simultaneously independently developing. Google search algorithms are not easy to debug. For this reason, although the above mentioned algorithms include components of machine learning, the possibility of it taking over the classical algorithm is extremely low.
Gary Illyes also commented on the artificial intelligence and the way it may change the search results. But just like with machine learning, he was quite clear that in the nearest future it won't affect traditional search significantly. However, it's constantly evolving and chances are that the way we search for information and what results we get will be changing gradually.
Google gives special space for certain groups March 24/2017
In the United States and Brazil Google released a new program which serves to give special space in search results for culture groups such as sports teams and leagues, entertainment, movies and music performers. This news only tells us that for Google, it's not just a quick experiment, otherwise there would be no expansion. From now on, Google will dedicate extra space to show the content related to the above mentioned groups in the search.
A year ago, Google announced about an experiment known as Google Posts to show certain kind of information separately right on its servers. However, it resulted into a new program providing these groups of content with specifically dedicated area. In the beginning of the experiment, these posts only included candidates who were running for the office of President of the US and later evolved to a small number of local enterprises. But today we can see that it keeps growing and is also available to sports famous teams and leagues, music performers and other culture objects and activists located in the United States and Brazil.
Google doesn't replace other information on the search results, which users got used to see, but Google Posts will appear on the top, drawing the users' attention to the most important info or breaking news related to the inquiry. Even though not many organizations are included into the service list by now, Google promises to develop and expand the program in the nearest future.
